about

Preface

"I would like to say a few things about this material and about how it came to be; a few important facts for you to know regarding how this particular album came alive.
I intended to compose the songs of this album for my fire show which is based on a burning drum stick trick technique. In this form, it is the first fire show performed by using a single drumkit, and the first drum show where burning drum stick tricks are used as part of the show.
I wanted to create a performance similar to a theatrical piece and so I decided to choose a theme that was a mystical one–fitting for the image of fire... My basic inspiration for the flaming drum stick idea was Linda Farkas's contact staff performance. I saw her solo performance where she played a contact staff on fire without touching it with her hands. That was a very amazing and inspirational experience. I had a few trick types which I already used in my solos and because of the impression that Linda had on me, I started to modify a few drum sticks. My goal was to light each stick on fire at both ends and to be able play with them without any injuries…
After a few prototypes I finally had some sticks ready to use. I use these not just as a visual element but also as part of the music: hitting the drums with them after every circular trick movement.

So I decided to make a fire show and I began composing the songs in 2012. Five of them were written within a few weeks. The remaining pieces were finished during the next 4 years. After I wrote some of the first songs, I tried to fit them to the story of Bartok's Bluebeard but the theme had proven to be too dark and so I gave up on that idea. Some of the first songs were used as background tracks of a variety show where I performed with Linda's Magma Firetheater group. During one of our discussions, she said: "Oh, how great it would be to be a wondrous deer! " She was a world-class fire costume designer, so personifying some kind of a mythical being was not a strange thing for her. It was this sentence of hers that inspired me when I chose the stag theme.

This album contains the songs of "The Wondrous Stag" fire & drum show which we have been performing continuously since 2015 together with my wife who is a dancer, choreographer and educator. The material also contains some other compositions of the same theme and atmosphere. The album versions sound a bit different than the live ones. There is the fire as the show element during a live performance which you cannot see while listening to an album :) . For this reason, every songs’ fiery drum parts were changed to drum solos or similar parts than the fiery ones but played with ordinary drum sticks. Thus, we can call this a concept solo album.
I invited my friend, Marius Pop from Romania, to perform in four of the songs and I'm very glad He accepted. He elevated the musical quality of this record to a higher level with his amazing guitar performance.

I would like to dedicate this album to Linda, who died in a tragic accident in 2016. She was an outstanding talent and a great inspiration, and I would like to keep the mysticism of her art alive with these songs…" O.Z.

The „Wondrous Stag” is an ancient legend of the wanderings of the Hun and Magyar tribes who started a long journey somewhere in Central or South-Central Asia. A mysterious deer led them towards a new home…
All songs are instrumental pieces. Following the name of each track, you can find excerpts which are translations from John Arany’s „The Legend of the Wondrous Hunt” to clarify which part of the story is the theme of the current song.
There are several cultures in different places on Earth that have used the image of a deer as a symbol or an artistic content. The figure appears in drawings or cave wall engravings of ancient tribes and old civilizations, on buildings still standing or on walls of ruins or on single stones. Some of these were used to illustrate the booklet.
